Iraq’s Ministry of Planning held a joint meeting this week with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and representatives from several ministries to discuss public works initiatives aimed at implementing a sustainable afforestation project in Iraq. The meeting was chaired by Deputy Minister for Technical Affairs, Dr. Maher Hammad Johan.
The discussions focused on a programme designed to create widespread employment opportunities through sustainable tree-planting projects across various governorates. The initiative emphasises inclusivity and diversity, and aims to shift communities from reliance on social aid to self-employment, thereby promoting both financial stability and environmental and economic sustainability.
Participants highlighted the programme’s importance in generating real jobs, benefiting from successful international models, enhancing the skills of the national workforce, and contributing to the achievement of sustainable development goals.
The meeting included representatives from the Ministries of Agriculture, Oil, Water Resources, Construction and Housing, as well as the National Security Advisory and relevant Ministry of Planning departments.
